Not sure what to do...

The people I just started to work for on a part time basis, while I am still recuperating, still use Windows 98 on all of their workstations. I asked why(?) and was told that their companies proprietary software will not run on XP, 2000 etc...

I was told that IF, I wanted to use the internet during breaks etc...

I had to install my own firewall, and antivirus on the workstation.

Where do I turn, for these... does anyone still make anything ?

This is a personal choice, but i personally would recommend.

Sygate Personal Firewall
: Says it works on win98- there is also a free version. I used to use this on XP for years (the free version).

AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition: Also claims to work on 98 and is a great free anti-virus system, also available free.

Installing these things and setting them up (like Firewall permissions) - can be a bit scary at first. I would STRONGLY recommend you play with installing them on your home personal PC first and get the hang of them before installing on your work comp.

Hope this somehow helps you.
Good luck with it.

I intentionally didn't post links on here, but if you do a search on each of the bold titles you will find free versions of both.

Sygate is still available? And for Free? Could you post a link? My customers use AVG, but for those bucketheads that refuse to use a router, they need something better than Windows firewall of course.....some of these people I'm really sick of seeing!

For old stuff always worth checking www.oldversion.com too - some of the old stuff is better than the new versions - and free-er.

Avast is a free solution... for home edition, which is very good as a defense mechanism for protecting your computer. http://www.avast.com/

Did they tried the propietary software on Compatibility mode in XP?
Also, if the software runs on DOS DosBox should be able to run it.
